History in the baking

Founded in 1855, the Beigel Shop was the original and first beigel bakery to open on Brick Lane. Since then, this landmark institution has continued to provide the historic tastes and traditions of the Jewish East End, mixed with the flavours of an evolving multi-cultural community.

Whether day or night, the timeless appeal of the Beigel Shop makes it the perfect spot for a light nosh, brunch, or midnight treat.

East Ender’s

In the below picture, East Ender’s Esther and Annie can be seen selling Brick Lane beigels outside Blooms in the late 1920’s. Our beigels have always been an integral part of the East End community and continue to do so to this very day.

Our journey

In 1987, brothers David and Aron purchased and took over the business (then named Evering Bakery) from the previous owners. David had already been working as a beigel baker in the shop for a few years prior, so owning and now running the business along with his brother Aron seemed like the perfect next step.

Family-owned business

The pair were soon joined by their sister Mazal, making it a true family-owned (or “mishpacha”) business. To this day, you can find the siblings in the shop and they’ve been joined by all of their own children through the years.

A little dough goes a long way

Each and every one of our beigels is made with love. While a beigel-shaping machine was introduced in 1994 to help with production increase, many of our products are still made by hand. Today, the bakery bakes over 7,000 beigels a day!

The “yellow one”

Determined to preserve the bakery’s legacy while also bringing it into more modern times, the name of the shop was changed in 2002 to Beigel Shop as it’s now known today (“beigel” being a nod to its yiddish origins). The bright yellow sign has also earned it the affectionate nickname “the yellow one”.

The proof is in the beigel

Great taste, the perfect texture and a 150-year-old traditional method of baking has been what has separated us from the rest. To this very day, our beigels are shaped, proofed, boiled and then baked on wooden planks, just as they were all those years ago.
